Mom...

- I do not ever think I will be able to wish you on social media. Like people today do. You aint gonna read those posts or messages or statuses - right? I fail to understand what medium might reach you, up there, afterall...

- Today, it is the toughest phase of my life. I wish you were here. But no, I am glad you aint. You would have hated to me standing here. AT this crossroad. At this road of endless curves and turns...yes, may be, I am just glad you are not here.

- I can't stand a mother and daughter hugging each other. And the daughter pulling pranks on the mother. And the mother laughing. That bond. That relationship. I can't stand. But know what, I have decided something. I am not gonna be like that. For how long will I turn my face or hide my tears when I see that bond? Not forever. I can't do it forever. So I am going to stop!

If tears could build a stairway,
and memories were a lane,
I would walk right up to heaven
to bring u home again.
No farewell words were spoken
no tym to say goodbye
You were gone before I knew it,
and only God knows why.
My heart still aches in sadness
and secret tears still flow,
what it meant to lose you,
no one will ever know.....
MISS U VERY MUCH MOM....

Irony...

Many people have come and told me that they like me because I am very wise. They look up to me for the wisdom I pass on. If they wanted an "Agony Aunt" I will be the first person to come to their minds.

Haa!

Of what use is this wisdom? Does it prevent me from getting hurt? Does it foretell me the pain that I might endure? Does it help me in identifying douche bags who might bother me?

What use, you tell me?...

Uncertainity...

Many things in life are unpredictable. Rather most things are.
Yet, we human, take this factor in our strides and continue moving on...and how?! Seen those huge schedulers and the calendar appointments through the year?
Yes, we plan. For the future. Daily planner / Weekly Planner/ Monthly planner and so on...
A mundane day in office, or so it seemed, turned out to be a nightmare for so many of my ex-colleagues/friends.
Getting laid off is not easy. It hurts. (Ouch). And it leaves you so unprepared for the future.
It is like "a surprise test" that we had in schools and colleges...or may be worse?
It has been only a few months since I took up this new job, and my previous colleagues are being asked to leave since the company is "down sizing"
One call from the HR; one visit to the boardroom, and it is the "end"
They do not count the number of hours you have put in - the years you have toiled - nothing matters.
Is it not completely unethical for companies to fire people like this?
Yes, they have provided a three month severance package, but what about the mental chaos?
Some say this is an opportunity for them to move forward...but really, why don't you show me the picture that I am going to move forward -- rather than being pushed forward!?
I am blessed / lucky to have not been in the company at this moment, but my heart goes out for those who were...
They all had dreams/ financial responsibilite/ new births in the family/ marriages around the corner...now what happens to all those?
Yes, they will move on...and begin a new phase of life...but it hurts a lot to being pushed in the valley without a warning.
They all must have planned for Saturday and Sunday...without realizing  that this Friday would never be forgotten! :(

There are things you do not remember.
There are things you do not want to remember.
Then, these drops and figments of memory percolate through your mind, and make a grand appearance.

It's not that I do not want to remember Mom.
It is just that I want to remember her in good ways. Like the perfectly normal dreams that I have - the four of us, and the happy family.
But then, memory has its own weird way.
It presents a picture to me during the most mundane of the stuff that I am doing. It hits me so hard that I have nothing but tears to brave.
The routine talks during lunch when each one of us is boasting/talking about how "my mom" makes this the best...and I realize I am the only one using a past tense "My mom used to make wonderful theplas"
Or those times when it dawns on me how the mom, any mom, is saving the larger share of food for the kids!
Routine talks with sister that end up on a bad note, and all I think of is, why is Mom not around to pacify the two of us!
Even those times when I hear or see people fighting with their Moms, I stand back and realize, I miss those too!

I may have fought with you a thousand times, and apologized tad lesser; but I never forget how sorry and deprived I feel for myself! How very!

At times I wonder whether I am still mourning? I cry like it was just yesterday...and then it hits me...the absence is going to be life time!

Do not tie your emotions to someone's reactions...

When you look like that - I feel am more beautiful.

When you compliment - I feel successful.

When you hug - I feel secure.

When you kiss - I feel wanted.

A vast range of emotions are tied up with the your reactions. Hence, be careful with them. In rage and in sanity.

A friend complains of physical abuse. And I wonder how does one get away with that. Shall she just walk out or tell him how his reactions matter to her, and at times break the very being of her. Being so attached so someone and then let that someone ruin your being - I think loving someone is like a double-edged sword. You get all the happiness from the same person who will hurt you the most too!

Quintessential

She screams loudly. But then, no one hears her. May be she did not give voice to her fears, apprehension, and thoughts. The tirade of emotions is building up, and the bubble of satisfaction might burst. Will she be able to take care of the situation then? Being quintessential is all she needs now, and that is one thing that she can not get. Why is it that she fails? Being patient, being objective, and letting things be - this is how at present, it is meant to be. She is holding on to hope and looking up at the sky. May be someone up there might actually hear her cry.

what are you?

no, that isn't a grammatically incorrect question?

i do not mean to ask, who or how are YOU? i mean to ask what are YOU?

this rant may be related to females based in india, or some other parts of the world where females are always ready to take the second step behind the male. and those females i ask, what are YOU!

i am not a feminist. the fact that one has to talk about females separately makes it a big deal, i mean one has a demarcation line only if there is a difference in both side of the fences. and i do not believe there is a difference. so this ain't about how males are being dominant and how they take females for a ride, it is about how females let them.

the female species have changed. and the modern female is no more shy of having things done her way or showing off her middle finger in public when harassed. but is this the case for all? the sex ratio in mumbai at present stands at ~840 females/1000 males. of these 840 females say 200 females would be the modern age ones - the one who might not be submissive and meek  the ones who believe in a ME. in an I. the one who does not become a THING for someone, just because their ancestors taught them so. or even if their parents  or mothers did not force that upon them, they become the male-worshiper kinds. no, i do not have an issue if YOU worship your male, but i have an issue that YOU do not worship YOURSELF.

YOU have come to this world with the same pain and hope that others have come along with. no one is taught to dream or laugh, it just comes. then why did YOU forget it? why did YOU let others decide YOUR happiness and where YOUR dreams should end? how can YOU let a male factor control everything in YOUR life? the trophy wife! even those are the ones who derive some pleasure of buying a sexy lingerie or go on a shopping escapade, to make SELF happy. why would YOU lose self? what has come to YOU?

females with an aim of getting married, producing beautiful kids with all five senses working, and then sacrificing their whole lives on ensuring that rest all get the best irks me. why would they lose themselves in this charade? why follow this pattern? a recent fire at Kolkatta, and a female cries and says now that my husband has died, what will happen of my life!? i agree. it is difficult. or yes even suicidal at times to think to live without a loved one, but do not lose self. do not lose the precious time that YOU have on this earth.

we are bestowed with so many abilities and capabilites that separates us from the lower forms of life. utilise it. to the fullest. do not surrender to someone or something so much so that you become a THING. a crowded mumbai station and a wife with 2 kids in tow forgets her way, so the husband comes from behind and slaps her, saying how could she lose her way. and she does not say a thing. who taught her to be so meek  when did she become such a pushover. why would she not stand up. what is it that stops her. why is she merely wasting her time on this planet by being something or someone that others want her to!

life is too short to do it. it is not that i will not surrender self to that somebody. but there will be a ME, alive and kicking. and till one breathes their last, that is how it should be!

Rise up. you, you and you.

Will I be known as the girl with "some weird hair cut"?

:(

Thank god that messed up look is sort of "in" otherwise I would have never managed to keep my hair the commercial-types smooth, silky and bouncy. I got this hair cut (I have once like in 2-3 months, don't ask me why) a few weeks back, and now a part of the length has grown and somehow I feel its making my hair look weird. Very weird. Like there is a bounce on one side, and a little curve at the bottom making it overall look like 'I have just got out of bed' look and also "I do not have a comb, why do you care?"

Oh the phases, and my stupid fears!

Fragments of imagination...

The present has engulfed her so bad, or was it the past that kept haunting her? She does not know what it was. The fact that she is trying to break the shackles of those rusted grey cells that dream of future, tells that her present is trying to move ahead? She is planning on planning for the future. Plans that mean more than filling the daily planner. But her pen does not frame a word. Her thoughts become hazy and digress.
She wants to dream. The way a common man dreams. Why is it so difficult? Has she succumbed to the fact that destiny will take over and lead her the way he wants to? Or is she being just too scared to speak out her feelings. Her fear of having things not the way she wants them. Her fear of not finding what she is looking for. Her fear of losing even before the battle began. Her fear of not even knowing what was she looking for...

I am feeling so guilty. Dad is not feeling great. He is at home. And here I am. Putting some not so-required long hours at work. I hate this feeling. I am scared. I am lonely. And I am just terribly restless. I know deep within that this is nothing, but somewhere the work, the office, the career, the everything else, other than him, seems so pointless and stupid. I wanna go home. Like now!

It pains a lot...

No, this is not about heart break or dreams shattering...

But you know what pains a real lot?
Much more than seeing the weighing scale tilt to the dreaded right...
Much more than not being able to fit in your oh-i-look-so-sexy top
Much more than not being able to get the movie tickets after you reach the theater
Much more than eating some crappy Shawarma for which you paid a zillion bucks...
Much more than missing the season finale of Desperate Housewives...
Much more than getting completely drenched in the rains post the movie you did not want to see...
Much more than not reaching home on time and missing out on the much-needed-sleep

Oh, well,
Yes, what pains more than all of the above...is....
Finding your chipped tooth in the food you were chewing!
So, as I was munching on this lebanese food during the weekend during a casual trip for a movie and dinner, I hog on the nachos (which by the way were from ''Not just Fries''..and they were good) and realize that err...something is not right!

And, brace yourself, what do I see...a teeny weeny part of my tooth is floating in the food...in my mouth! YES!!! That was gross! Shocking! Unbelievable! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw what I saw! All the happiness and sadness that was engulfing me just took a kick, and all that mattered to me was the chipped tooth...or rather what is left from the chipped tooth. Luckily it is not the incisor or something, it is the molar. And it is really a teeny weeny bit; like I can munch and chew food just like I used to. But then, a part of me, has just departed. And I feel sad. In pain. And *sigh* what not. RIP, you sweet dear part-of-tooth!

Oh man, the trip to the dentist...not again :(((((

Workplace woes

I believe, no, I strongly believe that I do all the work of my team at my workplace.

We are media people; we have a fast-paced environment, and people who know me can vouch for the fact that how bloody good I am under these kinds of circumstances. A good multi-tasker who is also an excellent team player, is vibrant, enthusiastic, adheres to deadlines with quality work..is how I would describe myself.

But it gets way too much when I am not able to control these emerging bouts of doing more than I should put on the platter. Yes, it does not hurt me. Yes, I am giving my 100 per cent and a little more. Yes, I might be appreciated after all for what I am putting in. But it hurts so much to see your immediate senior not doing a thing of what is assigned to him/her and you playing a jack-of-all role and dragging on! Then why do I put in more; or even my full.

I believe that has something to do with the way I am. A sincere girl, or I would like to think so. I have always adhered to deadlines, reached classes on time, finished homework on time, never missed an exam or test; always produced or tried to produced the best of the contents possible. Basically, I do not take the shorter route; yes, I am lazy, but it does not come in the way of producing best results.

After spending some 3 years or more in corporate world, it sucks to get this feeling of doing more than required. I really do not mind it; but you know that gut-wrenching feeling of going and telling your boss and complaining about how some colleague is merely shoving his/her work on you just because they are busy Facebooking! Oh well, or because you have shown them how good you are and they are ready to pass on the work to you. Even if it is not a part of your job description!

Well, yes, that feeling surpasses me way too often these days. I know I should probably not care. But then, I want things to be fair. And that is something I truly truly believe in. Ha! Cutting the crap. Whom am I kidding? Can I just go and strangle the person I am mad at?!

In the world of reality!

Since they were in India, it was difficult, if not impossible, for the metro couple to identify the sex of the child. It was not like it mattered a lot to them about what gender the kid is, but you know, they were just curious. His parents were from Chandigarh and not-so-conservative, so they should probably be okay with any sex. But being the only son, he had his concerns. Her parents were based in New Zealand, and were not the traditional kinds.
So when 'Rhea' came into the world it was amidst a lot of confusion. Confusion regarding her sex, regarding her acceptance, and for the love she might get from elderly.Luckily, apart from cringing just once and counting the number of fingers and toes, and observing her feet, her grand mom did not seem too unhappy with her. Her parents beamed with joy and assured everybody it did not matter to them whether it was a girl or a boy; they wanted the kid to be happy and healthy, and successful. And that they were not gonna have another child in this  expensive world.
Her birthdays were celebrated with style. On her 2nd birthday, She was gifted an expensive harmonica from her grand dad. A mini musical guitar from her nana-nani and swimming lessons from an extended aunt. Before she could even beam with joy or say "Wow" the harmonica was put in her mouth and it was tested whether she can blow into it and play some tune. The swimming lessons, which they started when she was almost 3, did not last long since she was too scared of water at that tender age. Her parents were patient, they said may be later. When she turned 4, the school she joined and the classes she attended left her no time to even sit in front of the TV for a few minutes or play in the mud. Rhea had already joined and left piano lessons, bharatnatyam classes, and some theatre group. Just within 6 months of joining, the teachers or organisers had told her parents, she just did not seem to have the touch or liking. Rhea was then enrolled for art and craft lesson. Along with her harmonium lessons and karate class, at the age of 7, she still could manage a little of staying at home time.
Rhea's parents did not think twice before enrolling her into the umpteen number of classes and workshops; they were just trying to find her forte. On insistence of their friends, they did leave Rhea free for one summer vacation. They travelled to Thailand, but she was asked or allowed to take snaps, just incase that's where her talent lied! Unfortunately, none of the pictures were 'good enough' to satiate their search of talent.
"Her 10the birthday is coming next week, you got any plans," her mother asked him once.
"Well,  let's see if we can still enroll her for the Shaimak Davar Dance group, am sure she would it there. They teach all kinds of dance, like even random street dance can be converted in to a good number."
"Don't you think we should try if she wants to sing or something? Dancing may be too exhaustive for her frail body?"
"Yeah, you got a point. If she develops a good voice and music knowledge at this age, better chances of making it big sooner."
"Oh, I can only imagine what she will be doing when she will be 12. Apart from coming in higher secondary, I hope she also gets involved in the school activities. May be we should give her a separate activity room by then so that she can do her practice without any disturbance."

Rhea silently left the room. She overheard the conversation and could not hold back her tears. Her parents were arguing. And yet again, this was about her lack of interest and skills in any activity. Her nani was trying to make them understand that she is just another 14-year-old. But her parents insisted that she does not seem to have a bright and promising future. No glamour, no fame. And she was so average in her studies too. "What will she do when she will grow up? Just work 9-5 or probably marry and stay at home? Why can't she atleast do something else. We are not trying for too much, but something other than what a normal kid does? Look at the kids today, aren't they brilliant in all spheres of life?"

When she was 12 and lacked the concentration skills or talent to pursue any extracurricular activities, when she failed two of the exams, her parents gave up on her and took her to a psychiatric. After several tests and some uncomfortable questions, the doctor concluded that she is fine, and does not (as they thought) suffer from any brain disorders or development problems. Unfortunately, Rhea is just a normal child who likes to stay at home, play, and probably watch some TV, if she has the time.

---
This post is dedicated to all those children who's parents are, hopefully not, forcing and coaxing them to participate in reality shows. With the increasing number of kids show featuring 3 and 4 year old's dancing, singing, acting, cooking, and what not, it is scary to imagine how they might be persuaded to develop a talent, and nothing else. A simple kid with no such interest or ability might face regret and failures in life, at too early a stage. I sincerely hope am wrong, and parents are letting the kids just be. I mean how many of us even remember humming a song with all the musical notes at the tender age of 3. Yes, gifted kids exist, but do not pressurize them into taking up an activity and developing a talent. Luckily I haven't seen any of my relatives or my friends doing this to their kids, but then do they regret that their kids are just ..umm..normal? Do parents desire and dream of seeing their kids instead of the ones on TV. Do they force their dreams on the kids? Does glamour attract people so much? Or is it the money? I shudder with the thought when I think of the girl who has acted as a boy in a few movies. Were her parents this adamant of having a boy or was it that the role required her to be featured as a boy? Or when I see some kids who look good with the front tooth broken on TV maintaining the same look for like years! It is not possible logically and I hope that there are no other reasons for such an appearance.
And I wonder whether education will go for a toss amidst all this? 'No degrees will give you the money or fame that the media will.' Will this thought be ingrained in their mind since age 2? Imagine the plight of that kid who is not interested in studying or sports or any such creative activity. Will he be the target of everyday bombarding by his parents? Wisdom tells me that the average Joe makes big in life, and one should not ever think that the mud-eating and no-poem singing guy in school will not do well in life, but will the parents of today's generation accept it?
All hopes and queries are bundled in this post, and if you are reading this, stop expecting too much outta your child and just let them be what he/she is, a kid!

While roaming through the e-library and going through the virtual stack of countless books, I realized one of them could be me. Mine. A book that transcends and narrates the chapters of my life,  year by year, page by page. Gripped by the thought I was so curious to know how the end might be like? Will it be happy? Will it be sad? Will it let the readers or fellow people use their imagination to conjure an end? Will it have an end, if at all? Or is 'the ending' always something that we make out of it? A frown that can be read as a smile when turned upside down. Or vice versa.

When the goin' gets tough...?

I have a thought. A thought that is whizzing around spherically, laterally, perpendicularly around my head since the past few weeks. There may have been a series of events that would have given birth to that very thought, the impression that this thought leaves behind is not very hooray-istic.
Remember when you read the last time how this and that event changed the whole being of that somebody, how this event made you sit back and ponder on things, you got certain things straight, you got all the wrong doings out, how you straightened the creases in your life on realizing that it is always crumbled around, and the likes. When was the last time you would have heard it? Yesterday, or higher chances are today.
I somehow have realised or have been thinking that this does not apply to me. I do not ever pull my socks, get focussed to do that certain thing, set a target for things-to-do, I am not a go-getter.
All these years and while I have been fooling myself (or may be right now, my thoughts are fooling me), that I am a go-getter. I get and achieve things that I wish or demand to have.
Materialistically yes, I do that. Financially, yes, I do that.
But I do not recollect that one moment that would have sent the whole principle book in my life, home.
That one moment wherein I would have cribbed in front of the mirror and set myself a target, and later on went ahead and achieved that.
I would have started a few diets, never reached till the end of it.
I let things go. I may be short tempered, but there is a certain laid back attitude to me.
Most of my managers have told me that I quit easily. Or rather, if I see a path that may look difficult or has not been untreaded, I let it be. I might be bloody good in walking and running on paths laid down for me, paths that assure me success, paths that seems bright and hopeful to me, but otherwise I let the other paths be.
Why do I do that? Why do I feel this?
I do like to the end of the day for projects I have started with enthusiasm, I have been known to have 1000 ideas of nothing, I do do think out of the box, but then this feeling of not working towards a particular something makes me feel a bit shallow within.
Like there is a way, there is a will somewhere, but somehow they do not work in sync.
Whenever I read about this nobody who became somebody in life, and how THAT ONE MOMENT made him/her realize what she wants to do, what he/she wishes to have, what he/she is looking forward to, I just feel empty.
I want that ONE MOMENT.
No rather, I would wish to act on that ONE moment.

Laid back, cool, lazy? What is it that is forbidding me?

Do not GLOAT!

Just like that...while traveling some two days back, I gloated over the fact that how I have never lost a cell phone or wallet!! And guess what? I am not finding my library book since that day. Orhan Pamuk :(

I called them today and confessed the misplacing of the book and promised I will replace the book.

But then, like a strict teacher, they told me I gotta go there fill in some forms, finish all the legal formalities and then they will decide what to do next with the "crime"

Well, well...

Lesson learnt: Do not ever gloat about things...life comes back to you at a full circle!! :'(

Fighter and me?

I am talking about being a fighter for independence, for freedom..am I one?

Or am I like the many other fellow country mates..who do nothing other than being at the loudest during most of these conversations or being the most verbal and angry during them.

What exactly am I doing for doing my bit for this "so called second fight to independence"?

Ok, I may not be totally a believer of the methods that Anna Hazare is using to fight off the evil corrupted government and the babus...but in today's scenario if he is standing there and doing something to make things work, or probably provide us a possibility for corruption-free India...then why not? Corruption kills you and me alike, if you are living here in India you are paying more every month, every few weeks for the essential commodoties that you buy everyday.

Cases in point, Medicine. When my dad started taking this tablets for his BP, last November, the cost was some 74. Today, the pack costs 88.

Hike in fares for auto, taxi, bus, and trains.

Petrol. I do not need to say more.

Increase in Service tax and VAT at Restaurants.

Increase in healthcare costs. Thank god for the government rolling back some clauses laid down in the budget, otherwise treatment in AC hospitals would have reached roof.

The usual commodities, like food items and food grains, etc. I cannot comment much on here since I am not too aware about their price a few months back.

My maid keeps on complaining all the time that the cost of Kerosene is killing them. Since they cook food using kerosene, one can wonder their plight must be like. She had cried in front of me when the cost of onions had reached 40/kg. For them, onions is like staple food, and the government could do nothing to help these poor people for a long phase of time.

The number of farmers committing suicide haven't changed much, so am taking that for granted that the cost in harvest crops would not gone down for sure.

When we see the tax payers money go down in corruption, it irks you to the core. It is mine, and yours, hard earned money. Why should someone like Raja or Kalmadi fill their filthy pockets with my money?

The number of potholes in Mumbai has almost made everyone forget how it is to ride on a smooth pothole-free road. Why does this happen? Because the government, take the tax payers money, make huge contracts, and take some money back under the table. This ensures that the contractors use third-grade materials to make the roads, and even fill the pot holes.

You and I have all faced corruption at some stages of our lives. Be it while standing in lines for an admission form or bribing the traffic police at the signal.
So much have our lives been surrounded by corrupt people, that it is almost difficult to imagine how it must be to live in a corruption-free world.

And the icing of the cake is definitely the speech and statements made by the honourable prime minister, wherein he states that for such a fast growing economy not much can be done about corruption, or it is difficult to keep corruption down to zero, or fasting is not a way to have your way - graft a solution. If this Lokpal bill were passed, would there not be a solution. On hindsight, it may be far far away, but yes, we would have taken a step forward. I really wished he did not speak even during the I-day. I remember as a kid I used to long watching the parade on I-day and Republic day, and this time it was so disappointing.

Yes, disappointing, and many such adjectives I can add to the current state of my mind as I read, see, and hear about the ongoing agitations, fights, fast, arrests, and politics.

But what am I actually doing about it? Where are my cents? Here?

I literally mock my USA-based friends when they post comments on FB saying how they hate all this, and something needs to be done. I mock them because a status on FB would not make any difference. Something huge, something bigger and better is required from you, and me, to bring about a change.

Yes, my blood boils when I see how shallow this people are and can get. Yesterday while researching more about the emergency state that was laid in India, I was appalled by the type of politics played and shall be played again.

But what am I doing for it?
Twitter is filled with all the updates about the event. Morchas and large gatherings are happening at several places in Mumbai. People were asked to wear black bands to voice their protest.

Did I do anything of it?
No.

- I had a busy day at work.
- I had plans to meet a homoepath.
- I wanted to reach home on time to see Masterchef.

You see how shallow and meaningless these reasons are. I was too coward and lazy and just a couch bag when it came to go out there and do something.

Agreed, that this does not mean that I do not agree or think parallel like the people of India, but I somewhere feel I did let myself down.

I may be not be a patriot in the true sense. I will not go and yell at Morchas or may be even participate in a candle light vigil. What I see is, if I do, I do not make a much difference to myself. So as to where I would stand in the fight against the bad.

But, I really do not know whether I lack courage to stand and do something. Can the little being really do something? Would participating in a fast and morcha mean that I am a fighter for my rights? Yes, I wanna be the good in the good vs evil. But what exactly do I need to do to be the good. To let the people there know they have my support. Its definitely not a comment saying "I am there with you Annaji"
It is much larger, and may be I can begin at some ground level.

Just a thought, if I were born pre-independence, would I not have joined those freedom fights? The Dandi March, the Quit India movement? Would I be still writing letters back then and voicing my agitation?

Is there really a fighter within me?

Bombay

Yeah, we were bombed. Again.

And since my workplace is very near to the blast site, I was flooded with concerned near and dear ones' calls and texts.

I hate the spirit of Mumbai, we just bounce back to no matter what all you give us.

Those cowards killing innocents, deserve hell.

I do not know, what else to say. I am kinda in an awkward mode.

PS: Would I be too shallow, if I were to think that people/friends/near ones who didn't call or enquire about my well-being yesterday, ummm....are kinda too busy to care? Was tis a reality check?
